"I don't even know if I want maternity photos."

I actually hear this hesitation a lot. Maybe you're not feeling your most photogenic. Maybe the bump showed up what feels like overnight and you're still getting used to it. Maybe you're just freaking exhausted. All of that is normal, and none of it means you should skip this.

Maternity photos aren't about looking a certain way. They're about remembering this season while you're still in it, because it moves faster than anyone warns you. So let's talk about the practical stuff first: when to book, and when to actually have your session:

The sweet spot: around 28 to 36 weeks

Most maternity sessions happen somewhere between 28 and 36 weeks, and there's a good reason for it. Your bump is round and unmistakable by then, and most people still feel okay walking a field, sitting on the floor with a toddler, or standing for a few minutes in a spot with great light. Earlier than that, the bump can still be a little shy. Later than that, you may be more tired, more swollen, and a lot closer to the finish line than you want to be while planning a photo session. (This is very dependent on YOUR body so don't let me hold you back)

That said, I did mine around 26 weeks and loved it! I felt round and cute. Totally myself and not like a beached whale.

I like to build in a buffer for you, too. Babies have their own schedule, and a session at 28 to 34 weeks gives you wiggle room if yours decides to make an early entrance. If you're expecting multiples, or your doctor has asked you to take it easy, earlier may be the better call. Check with your provider, and we'll plan around you.

When to actually book (it's earlier than you think)

Here's the part that surprises people: you don't wait until week 30 to book. You book around the middle of your second trimester, then pick a session date that lands in the sweet spot. Photographer calendars fill up, especially in the fall and around the holidays, and you want your choice of dates, not whatever happens to be left.

A simple way to picture it:

  • Second trimester: reach out and hold your date.
  • Weeks 28 to 36: your session.
  • A couple of weeks before: pick outfits and settle on a location.

Picking a season in Central New York

One of the perks of being in CNY is that every season looks completely different. There's a variety of backdrops for us to choose from in every season, so choosing a location will never be an issue.

And honestly, the best season is the one you're pregnant in--we'll make it work. Here's how they play out for maternity sessions:

Winter

Snow, soft light, and a very cozy feel. Days are short and the weather can be unpredictable, so we'll keep a flexible plan and an indoor option in our back pocket.

Spring

Blooms, green fields, and fresh light. It can also be muddy and rainy, so we'll keep an eye on the forecast and shift the date if we need to.

Summer

Long golden evenings and sunlit fields. The heat can be a lot when you're pregnant, so early morning or evening sessions are usually the most comfortable.

Fall

Warm light, rich color, and cozy layers. Peak foliage is a short window (usually early to mid October, though it shifts every year), so book early if the leaves are your dream backdrop.

What a maternity session actually feels like

I'm not trying to pose the real out of you. We'll start with a chat, pick a spot that feels like you (a field, a flower farm, the streets of downtown Syracuse, your own living room), and go from there.

Instead of stiff poses, you'll get gentle prompts. Walk toward me. Laugh at something your partner says. Rest your hands wherever they want to rest. Bring your partner, your kids, or your dog. A solo session is just as lovely.

It should feel less like a photoshoot and more like hanging out with a friend who happens to have a camera.

Quick answers for faqs

Do I need to know how to pose?

Nope. I'll guide you the whole way, and the best photos usually happen in the moments in between.

What if I'm not feeling photogenic?

You're in good company. Most Mamas feel that way before their session, and most are surprised by how much they love the photos. You don't have to feel confident to start. That's my job.

Can I bring my partner, kids, or dog?

Absolutely. Including the people (and pets) who are part of this chapter is a big part of what makes the photos feel like yours.

What should I wear?

Something you feel like yourself in, ideally with fabric that moves with your bump. My Wardrobe Guide has the full rundown.

Is it too late if I'm past 36 weeks?

Not necessarily. Reach out and we'll see what works, and check in with your provider about what's comfortable for you.

Ready when you are
